Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) often affect women differently than men. Some cause noticeable symptoms, while others remain silent for months or even years. Left untreated, STIs can lead to serious complications, including infertility.
Our team offers confidential testing, diagnosis, and treatment to help you take control of your sexual health in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment.
What Are STIs?
STIs are infections passed from one person to another through sexual contact. They may be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites and can affect the vagina, cervix, uterus, rectum, throat, or other areas.
Some of the most common STIs include:
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- Human papillomavirus (HPV)
- Genital herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2)
- Trichomoniasis
- Syphilis
- HIV
- Hepatitis B and C
Many infections can be managed or cured, especially when caught early.
Common Symptoms of STIs in Women
STIs often cause no symptoms at all, especially in the early stages. When symptoms do occur, they may include:
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Unusual “fishy” smell
- Burning or pain with urination
- Genital itching, redness, or irritation
- Sores, bumps, or blisters on the genitals
- Pain during sex
- Pelvic or lower abdominal pain
- Bleeding between periods or after sex
Because many of these symptoms overlap with other gynecologic issues, testing is the only way to know for sure.
Why STI Testing Matters
Even without symptoms, STIs can lead to serious health problems if untreated, including:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Infertility
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Cervical cancer (in the case of persistent HPV)
- Increased risk of contracting or transmitting HIV
Routine screening protects not only your health, but also your partner’s.
When to Get Tested
You should consider STI testing if you:
- Are sexually active and under age 25
- Have a new sexual partner or multiple partners
- Are starting a new relationship
- Are experiencing symptoms of an infection
- Have a partner who tested positive or shows symptoms
- Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
Routine screenings are part of preventive care, even if you feel fine.
What to Expect During Testing
STI testing is quick, private, and usually involves:
- A urine sample
- A vaginal or cervical swab
- A blood test (for HIV, syphilis, or hepatitis)
- A physical exam, if symptoms are present
You’ll be treated with respect and discretion throughout the process. Results are typically available within a few days.
Treatment Options
Many STIs can be cured with antibiotics, while others are managed with ongoing care:
Bacterial STIs (curable):
- Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis – treated with oral or injectable antibiotics
Viral STIs (manageable, not curable):
- Herpes – managed with antiviral medications to reduce outbreaks
- HIV – managed with antiviral therapy to reduce viral load
- HPV – may clear on its own; abnormal cells monitored or removed with follow up
- Hepatitis B/C – treated with antiviral medications and lifestyle support
Your provider will review your results and develop a personalized treatment plan. Partners may also need testing and treatment to prevent reinfection.
STI Prevention Tips
- Use condoms or dental dams during sex
- Limit number of sexual partners
- Get vaccinated (HPV and hepatitis vaccines are highly effective)
- Avoid douching, which can disrupt the vaginal environment
- Get tested regularly, even if you don’t have symptoms
We’re here to help you make informed, empowered choices about your sexual health.
